If there is rust, it’s time to stop and think about safety

When you’re working with your construction crew, one thing you have to do is make sure that the equipment you’re using is safe. Whether it’s a ladder or a piece of scaffolding, you’ll want to check it over and be positive that it looks like it’s in good condition.

One of the things that could hurt your tools or equipment and potentially weaken them is rust. Rust happens with oxidation, which happens when oxygen comes into contact with certain metals for an extended period of time. When rust occurs, the metal bonds are weakened, which could mean that a step on a ladder can no longer support the full weight limit or that an important screw will disintegrate when a machine is put into motion.

Rust is a serious issue for construction teams who work outside, specifically. That’s why it’s so important to let your employer know about any rust that is starting to develop, even if it seems minor. Once it’s out of control, it can cause deterioration, the weakening of components or the failure of an item completely.

The way to prevent rust from affecting your workplace is to use galvanized metals. These resist rust better, though the joints and holes may still be prone to rusting under the right conditions.

Should you use an item that has rusted?

It’s normally not a good idea to use a rusted item unless you know that your safety won’t be at risk. It’s better to replace the items that have rusted or to have them repaired so that you and your co-workers can work safely and get your job done right.
