A worker chose to spend his time cleaning up at the World Trade Center after 9/11, but had no idea that it would take a serious toll on his health. This individual spent much of his time at the devastating site of the 9/11 Twin Tower collapse in the months following the ordeal. While cleaning up at the site, he did not realize that he was constantly inhaling asbestos from the debris. The asbestos in the dust around the disaster zone caused serious medical conditions as the years went on.

Recently, this worker went called Katz Leidman Grossman Wolfe & Freund to discuss his case. A doctor diagnosed the worker with rhinitis, RADS and GERD, all resulting from the asbestos exposure. Rhinitis is the inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose and results in a stuffy nose, runny nose, or post-nasal drip. Rhinitis can also bring on a sore throat, a cough, congestion, or a slight headache.

This individual also developed Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS.) This is an illness that can cause a person to suffer coughing, wheezing, and dyspnea. RADS is sometimes classified as occupational asthma. The worker also suffered Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD.) This is also known as acid reflux disease and causes the stomach acid to move up into the esophagus causing an uncomfortable burning sensation.

This painful illness can cause heartburn and regurgitation on many occasions. Because the worker suffered all of these illnesses specifically due to the fact that he inhaled asbestos fibers after the clean-up at the 9/11 disaster site, he was able to win a $195,000 settlement. This settlement helped to cover his medical bills and compensate him for the unnecessary suffering that he suffered.
