More than 100 plaintiffs have suffered the adverse effects of asbestos exposure, and are now banding together in a class action lawsuit in order to seek compensation for their pain and medical bills. According to Asbestos.com, the 100 plaintiffs are all workers and patrons who constantly came to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, New York for games and other events. All the plaintiffs claim that the coliseum failed to protect them from asbestos exposure and therefore they deserve a cumulative $1 billion in compensation to divide among themselves.
COLISEUM WORKERS AFFECTED BY ASBESTOS EXPOSURE
Newsday reports that about 140 people have filed notices of claim against Nassau County. The plaintiffs have also targeted the New York Islanders, the facility manager, and the facility’s owner in their lawsuit. Many of the plaintiffs claim that they have suffered mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis as a result of their injuries from asbestos. They believe that if the venue had been more concerned about the health conditions within the stadium, it would have saved many people from suffering painful and debilitating injuries.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the coliseum for 16 violations of workplace safety standards last year, giving even more merit to the case. The OSHA came to inspect the coliseum after one employee filed a complaint about the asbestos exposure. After discovering that the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was certainly not up to legal safety standards, the OSHA proposed a $88,000 fine for all the violations.
The building’s maintenance workers and electricians were exposed to asbestos on a regular basis, and the OSHA declared that there was danger for mesothelioma and the lung illnesses in many parts of the building. The Coliseum managers were blamed, and the OSHA declared that they could have avoided the hazards if they had just been more careful with their building conditions.
